UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls calls for the recognition of prostitution as a form of violence in her most recent report
A courageous woman faces the United Nations Human Rights Council!
During the 56th session of the Human Rights Council Reem Alsalem, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against women and girls, officially presented the “Prostitution and violence against women and girls” report. The report marks a historic time in women’s rights news, as this is the first time that a Special Rapporteur frames prostitution not only as a form but also as a cause and consequence of violence.
Very importantly, the UN Special Rapporteur’s report is the product of a transparent, democratic process in which a public call to contributions resulted in more than 300 submissions from civil society – survivors of the prostitution system, frontline workers, non-governmental organisations – and experts on the topic of prostitution.
